The terms Haute Couture and Prêt-à-porter are what the French fashion best described in their fascinating versatility. Historically, it was an Englishman living in Paris who founded Haute Couture. In the mid-19th century, he had his collection presented for the first time by mannequins: a novelty in the fashion scene of the time. The term Haute Couture is protected in France and is awarded by the Paris Fashion Association Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Only a few labels are allowed to use it officially for their collections. In contrast to haute couture, these collections are produced in larger quantities.
