They are not only really warm, but also really hip. We are talking about parkas. A garment – and a word – that actually has its origins in Inuit culture. In the icy north of Alaska, this warming jacket was invented and has been donating warmth with style throughout the world for decades. Also, the translation of the quite peculiar word is a clear indication of the cold weather capability of the thick jacket. In the language of the Inuit, “parqaaq” means as much as heat.
The US Army recognized the heat-giving qualities of the Parkas in the 1940s, and soon afterwards they were also used in the Bundeswehr. Now it was not long before the jackets also found their way into everyday clothing. In the 60s, they were especially popular among students. In the UK, they were an important part of Mods clothing. Meanwhile, they are just as popular with young and old as well as ladies and gentlemen and appear every winter in new interpretations in fashion collections. Inspired by its military history in casual camouflage patterns or trendy colors, parkas enjoy immense popularity every year.
PARKAS – HEAT DISPENSER WITH STYLE
It is cut and material that gives the parkas their warming qualities. Unlike other jackets, they cover at least the thighs. In addition, they are always equipped with a hood – often removable – which are covered with fur. In the past, it was usually made from a dense and heavy cotton fabric designed to keep out wind and weather. Today, there are also high-quality high-tech materials such as nylon or coatings, which make Parkas even more resistant to inclement weather. Many pockets – but at least two flap pockets – that protect the hands from the cold are also part of the basic design of Parkas.
Depending on your needs, whether for casual fashion or for transition, there are other ways to equip Parkas weatherproof. While casual transitional models are also made from lighter-weight materials, outdoor models often have extra protective snap-on buttons over the zipper and drawstrings at the collar or leg cuffs to protect the wearer from the wind.
